Mooseheads score four power play goals in third for 7-1 win in Game 2

HALIFAX, N.S. - The Halifax Mooseheads scored four power play goals in the third period to run away with a 7-1 win over the Charlottetown Islanders in Game 2 of the best-of-seven quarter final series Saturday night at Halifax Metro Centre.

Halfiax leads the series 2-0 and it will now shift to Charlottetown for Games 3 and 4.

Jonanthan Drouin (2-2) and Nikolaj Ehlers (1-3) led the way for Halifax with four points each. Philippe Gadoury added a pair of goals as Darcy Ashley (1-2) and Andrew Shewfelt chipped in with goals. MacKenzie Weegar had three assists.

Daniel Sprong had the lone goal for the 15th-seeded Islanders.

Jonathan Drouin enjoyed a four-point night. 
The Islanders opened the scoring with Sprong scoring his second goal of the playoffs, snapping a wrist shot over the glove of Mooseheads goalie Zachary Fucale at the 5:23 mark of the first period. Alexandre Goulet drew the lone assist. Halifax tied the game on the power play with Gadoury scoring his first of the post-season at 9:20. Nikolaj Ehlers and MacKenzie Weegar drew assists. Halifax held a 17-7 shot advantage.

It was the Mason McDonald show in the second period. Halifax fired 21 shots on the 17-year-old Halifax, N.S. native and it took until the 16:03 mark when Gadoury saw his second of the night go in off the skate off Islanders defenceman Guillaume Rioux-Legault’s skate to give Halifax a 2-1 lead. Ashley drew the lone assist. Moments later at the 17:45 mark, Drouin gave the Mooseheads a 3-1 lead with Ehlers drawing the lone assist.

Penalty trouble struck the Islanders in the third period. Ashley gave the Mooseheads a 4-1 lead at 5:01 with a power play marker. Weegar and Drouin drew assists. Ehlers then increased the Mooseheads lead with a power play goal at 11:30. The goal was his second of the playoffs with Drouin and Weegar drawing assists. Drouin added his second of the game and third of the playoffs with a power play goal at 14:41. Ashley and Ehlers drew assists. Lastly, Shewfelt scored a power play goal at 16:17 to give Halifax a 7-1 lead with Danny Moynihan and Luca Ciampini drawing assists.

Zachary Fucale wasn’t tested much and made 19 saves in the win for Halifax. McDonald made 41 saves in the loss for Charlottetown.

Halifax went five-for-10 on the power play and now have eight power play goals in the series. Charlottetown was scoreless on four power play opportunities.

Game 3 goes Tuesday March 25 at Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown for a 7 p.m. puck drop. Game will be broadcasted live on Eastlink TV.
