Chlapik leads the way for Islanders in 5-1 win over Voltigeurs
Filip Chlapik scored five points, including a hat trick, to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 5-1 win over the visiting Drummondville Voltigeurs Sunday afternoon at Eastlink Centre.
"It's pretty good, I'm so happy," said Chlapik on his five-point night. "We played good like a team."
The Islanders have won three straight games and improve to 12-11-1-1 on the season.
"It feels pretty good," said Chlapik. "The atmosphere is better after that...we must keep going like this."
Charlottetown completes a two-game sweep against the Voltigeurs after picking up an 8-3 win in Drummondville last Sunday. The Voltigeurs are now 10-11-0-2 on the season.
Islanders opened the scoring at the 9:20 mark of the first period with Alexandre Goulet's 10th of the season. Daniel Sprong and Chlapik drew assists. Shots were 10-9 Islanders.
In the second period, Chlapik scored his first goal of the game on a breakaway at 3:48 for his 11th of the season. Dexter Weber drew the lone assist.
Drummondville cut the lead in half with a power play marker from Alex Barre-Boulet at 11:28. Georgs Golovkovs and Sergei Boikov drew assists on Barre-Boulet's fifth of the season.
Charlottetown regained the two-goal lead with a power play goal from Chlapik at 11:49 for his second of the game and 12th of the season. Ryan MacKinnon and Goulet drew assists.
On another power play, Sprong scored his 13th of the season at 17:17 to give the Islanders a 4-1 lead. MacKinnon and Chlapik drew assists. That goal would spoil the night for Volts starter Louis-Philip Guindon after allowing four goals on 16 shots.
Chlapik added his third goal of the game and fifth point of the night at 16:17 of the third period to give the Islanders a 5-1 lead. Goulet and Bradley Kennedy drew assists. Shots were 19-7 in favour of Charlottetown.
"I was happy," said Chlapik on scoring the first hat trick in Islanders history. "I must say thank you to my teammates and my linemates for nice passes from them."
Mason McDonald made 23 saves in the win for Charlottetown. Joe Fleschler made 19 saves in relief for Drummondville.
The Islanders will look to make it four-straight wins on Saturday when they visit the Saint John Sea Dogs for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
Islanders Insights:
-Islanders were 2-for-4 on the power play, while going 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
-Islanders outhit the Volts 27-20. Keith Getson led the game in hits with five.
-Filip Rydstrom was the best face-off guy for Charlottetown going 14-for-22 in the face-off dot.
-Filip Chlapik led the Islanders in shots with six.
