Oceanic dominates Islanders with 8-2 win
Christopher Clapperton scored a hat-trick and Alexis Loiseau picked up four points as the visiting Rimouski Oceanic handed the Charlottetown Islanders an 8-2 loss Sunday evening at Eastlink Centre.
The Oceanic improves to 18-7-1-1 on the season after losing 8-2 in Halifax less than 24 hours before the game.
“We just wanted to bounce back,” said Clapperton who was named the game’s first star. “We had a good meeting before the game and we’re very happy right now.”
Clapperton’s hat-trick was the second of the season. He was happy to get it.
“I’m a veteran so I need to lead by example and I had good game tonight so I’m happy.”
For the Islanders, the loss snaps a four-game winning streak and are now 13-12-1-1 on the season.
Daniel Sprong, who scored both Islanders’ goals, said snapping the winning streak hurts especially after a blowout.
“It is what it is. We have to get ready. We have a good three days of practice and get ready for the weekend again.”
It was a tough loss, said Sprong.
“We got outplayed in some areas of the game. It’s never good to get blown out like that but we have to regroup and get ready for Thursday.”
The Islanders gave up four goals in an eight minute span in the second period after narrowing the deficit to 3-1.
It was unfortunate bounces, said Sprong.
“They had some good bounces that lead good goals but we didn’t answer back good enough and they took advantage of our mistakes and it certainly showed on the scoreboard.”
Rimouski opened the scoring with Clapperton’s 11th of the season and first of the game at 15:31. Anthony DeLuca made it 2-0 at 18:53 with his 19th of the season before Samuel Morin found the back of the net for his first of the season with a buzzer-beater at 19:59. Shots were 11-11.
In the second period, Sprong put the Islanders on the board with his 14th goal of the season at 3:10. Kameron Kielly drew the lone assist.
Just 32 second later, Clapperton’s second of the game and 12th of the year made it 4-1 Rimouski. William Couture added his third of the season at 5:19.
Couture’s goal would end the night for Islanders starter Mason McDonald after giving up five goals on 14 shots.
Loiseau made it a 6-1 game just 20 seconds later for his 19th of the season. The goal was Daryl MacCallum’s first shot on goal. Rimouski made it 7-1 at 6:54 with Francois Beauchemin finding the back of the net for his second of the season.
In the third period, Sprong added his second of the game and 15th of the season at 8:44 to make it a 7-2 game. Will Thompson and Kielly drew assists.
Clapperton added his third of the game with a power play marker at 18:32.
Olivier Tremblay made 29 saves in the win for Rimouski. MacCallum made 11 saves on 14 shots in relief of McDonald.
The Islanders are back it Thursday Nov. 27 when they host the Saint John Sea Dogs at 7 p.m.
