Islanders return from holidays with 4-1 win over Titan
A pair of goals 35 seconds apart into the second period gave the Charlottetown Islanders a boost in a 4-1 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan Sunday afternoon at Eastlink Centre.
Charlottetown scored all its goals in the second period after the Titan tallied first in the opening frame.
Newcomer Quinn O’Brien, who assisted on the game’s winning goal by Spenser Cobbold, said it was amazing to get the win in his first game with the Islanders.
“I’m really happy about it. It was a good team performance.”
He said the team came out slow.
“You got to expect that after the holidays. We just came out and played a game and found a way to win.”
O’Brien was happy to pick up a point in his Islanders debut.
“I just picked up the puck and I saw a black jersey and it just happened to be a nice pass. It feels very nice and it’s just a beginning.”
The Islanders win its third straight game and improve to 18-17-1-1 on the season. The Titan falls to 10-23-4-1.
Bathurst opened the scoring at 11:16 with Aaron Kerr tallying his ninth goal of the season from Mark Simpson and Egor Popov. Shots were 8-3 in favour of Charlottetown.
In the second period, Alexandre Goulet scored his 20th goal of the season on the power play at 2:30 to tie the game. Ryan MacKinnon and Luc Deschenes drew assists. Cobbold made it 2-1 at 3:05 with his fourth goal of the season with O’Brien and MacKinnon drawing assists.
Bradley Kennedy made it 3-1 at 12:07 with his ninth goal of the season. Cobbold and Dexter Weber drew assists. That goal would spoil the afternoon for Titan starter Jacob Brennan after surrendering three goals on 16 shots. He was replaced by Alexandre Lagace.
Goulet’s second of the game made it 4-1 Islanders at 15:46 with Daniel Sprong and Filip Chlapik drawing assists on the tic-tac-toe play. Shots were 14-12 Charlottetown.
The third period was scoreless but saw the Islanders outshoot the Titan 13-4.
Mason McDonald made 18 saves in the win for Charlottetown. Lagace made 18 saves in relief of Brennan.
The Islanders host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Tuesday Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
“We need to continue listening to our game plan and work hard,” said O’Brien. “With hard work, good things come.”
