Former Charlottetown Islanders defenceman Anthony Cortese was named the NAHL Defenceman of the Month for January, yesterday.

The 20-year-old, Pierrefonds, Que., native has been suiting up for the Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League this season.

He earned the honours after collecting three goals and 15 points in 11 games during the month of January. Cortese earned a point in nine of the 11 games and is currently riding on a nine-game point streak.

Cortese currently has 13 goals and 43 points in 41 games which ranks him first in league scoring amongst defencemen. He is also second in team scoring with the IceRays.
In a league release, IceRays Head Coach Jon Becanic said Cortese has been putting up points all season.

"He has worked very hard to improve his defense because he is so effective on the offensive side. The thing I really like about him is he is very selfless. He isn’t concerned about points. He is concerned with team success and seeing his teammates get better. That is a trademark of a very good veteran player."

In the same release, Cortese said he has had a great experience with the IceRays.

"It is a first-class organization and the league is very competitive. There is a lot of talent to play against the it has been fun so far. I think we have a team that can go really far in the playoffs this season. My focus is to help them achieve that and then hopefully an opportunity to play college or pro hockey will be later in the future.”

Cortese scored 11 goals and  41 points in 95 games with the Rocket/Islanders.
