Lazarev, Screaming Eagles dominate Islanders

Maxim Lazarev scored four goals and an assist as the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles took a 6-2 Friday the 13th victory over the Charlottetown Islanders.

Cape Breton held a 3-2 lead after two periods and exploded for three goals in the third period to improve to 24-24-2-3 on the season. The Islanders drop to 27-23-1-3.

Islanders captain Ryan MacKinnon said the team came out flat in the third period.

“We talked about it all game between periods to get back to our simple game and get back to shots on net. We constantly kept turning the puck over and that’s the result you’re going to get.”

It’s a tough way to lose at home, said MacKinnon.

“We had all week to prepare for this game. It’s unfortunate that we showed all the fans tonight that’s the performance we gave.”

The Islanders are now on a minor two-game losing streak.

“The guys are maybe grabbing the sticks a little too hard,” said MacKinnon. “In times like this you just got to get back to basics and start working harder. This late in the season teams are grinding out to make that playoff run and points are very hard to come by. Once we realize that, we should be alright.”

Cape Breton opened the scoring with Lazarev’s first of the night and 25th of the season with a power play goal at 9:56 with Evgeny Svechnikov and Jonathan Deschamps drawing assists. Svechnikov finished the night with a goal and two assists.

The Islanders tied the game with Mitchell Balmas scoring his fifth goal of the season at 16:41. Fellow rookies Samuel Guilbault and Keith Getson drew assists.

Lazarev was quick to respond, giving the Screaming Eagles a 2-1 lead just 1:07 later. Marcus Hinds picked up his first of four assists on the night.

Shots were 16-9 in favour of Cape Breton.

In the second period, Lazarev completed the hat-trick at the 15:50 mark for his 27th of the season with Hinds drawing the lone assist.

The Islanders made it a one-goal game at 18:32 with Filip Chlapik scoring on the power play on a questionable high-stick. After review, the goal stood and Chlapik was credited with his 25th goal of the season. Daniel Sprong and Alexandre Goulet were given assists.

Shots were 11-9 Cape Breton.

Alexandre Gosselin gave the Screaming Eagles a 4-2 lead at 4:29 of the third period with a power play goal for his eighth of the season. Lazarev and Hinds drew assists.

Svechnikov made it a 5-2 game at 7:44 with his 23rd goal of the season. Duncan MacIntyre drew the lone assist.

Lazarev added the salt on the wound with a power play goal at 9:52 for his fourth of the game. Hinds and Svechnikov drew assists.

Miguel Sullivan made 23 saves in the winning goal for Cape Breton. Mason McDonald made 27 saves in the loss for Charlottetown. Daryl MacCallum played 10:08 in relief of McDonald and stopped all eight shots faced.

The Islanders are back it tomorrow night for a Valentine’s date against the Shawinigan Cataractes at 7 p.m.
