Islanders down Titan for second straight win

Kameron Kielly’s late second period goal proved to be the winner in a 4-3 Charlottetown Islanders win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan Friday night at Eastlink Centre.

“We battled hard but we still have yet to put together 60 minutes,” said the 17-year-old Charlottetown native Kielly. “We played hard and obviously that’s two big points for us again against them and we’re happy with the outcome.”

With the win, the Islanders improve to 4-1-1-0 on the season with nine points.

It’s still too early to be mesmerized by the record, said Kielly.

“Obviously we’ll take the points if we can get them. We’ll keep building on it and hopefully better things can come.”

The Titan losses its fifth straight game and sit last in the Maritimes Division with a 1-5-0-0 record.

Bradley Kennedy and Kielly scored 1:11 apart late in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Kielly also added an assist on the night.

Mark Simpson led the way for the Titan with two goals.

It was just Wednesday when these two teams last met in Bathurst. Kielly said the Islanders had more of a jump tonight.

“We played more of a complete game and we played more minutes than we did Wednesday but we’re still working on putting 60 minutes together.”

Filip Chlapik opened the scoring at the 4:23 mark of the first period with his fifth goal of the young season. Daniel Sprong and Guillaume Rioux-Legault drew assists. Shots were 12-9 in favour of Bathurst.

In the second period, Simpson tied the game for Bathurst at the 2:01 mark with Egor Popov drawing the assist. Alexandre Goulet regained the lead for Charlottetown with his second goal of the season at 6:30 with Kielly drawing the lone assist. The Titan tied the game 2-2 with Simpson’s second goal of the game and sixth of the season at 12:09.

The Islanders pulled ahead 3-2 with a power play goal from Bradley Kennedy at 16:14. Ryan MacKinnon and Spenser Cobbold drew assists. Moments later, Kielly’s fifth goal of the season made it a 4-2 Islanders game at 17:25. Goulet and Oliver Cooper drew assists.

Kennedy’s power play goal was huge, said Kielly.

“That was big for us to cash in on that, grab a little momentum and I was just looking to follow that up with a good shift and was fortunate enough to get a bounce.”

Shots in the second period were 13-8 in Bathurst’s favour.

The Titan had the lone goal of the third period coming on the power play, with the net empty, off the stick of Juraj Mily at 18:34.

Mason McDonald picked up his second win making 30 saves for the Islanders. Rookie Alexandre Lagace took the loss for the Titan making 20 saves.

The Islanders will host the Moncton Wildcats Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. AST.

“Not hard to get up for that one,” said Kielly. “Obviously a pretty good rivalry as everyone knows. We have to be up and ready for it and play a complete game.”
