Islanders fall short in 4-3 shootout loss to Olympiques

The Gatineau Olympiques erased a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-3 shootout win over the Charlottetown Islanders Saturday night at Eastlink Centre.

Joey Richard scored the winning shootout goal as the Olympiques’ snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 16-24-0-4 on the season. The Islanders drop its second straight game in the shootout and are now 20-19-1-3.

“It’s a tough loss obviously,” said Islanders assistant Kameron Kielly. “Bounces happen like that but overall we’re happy with the way we played.”

The team played a great 60 minutes, said Kielly.

“Good weekend in general but it sucks. Hockey is a game of bounces and they just weren’t coming our way.”

Two back-to-back shootout losses hurt, said Kielly.

“It’s just the matter of the game. It sucks it comes down to a shootout sometimes but that’s the way it is.”

For the 18-year-old Charlottetown native, it was his fourth time playing the Olympiques since being traded from Gatineau to Charlottetown in August of 2013.

It was a high-emotion game, said Kielly.

“It’s fun playing them. I wasn’t as nervous as my first time but to score against them felt pretty good actually.”

Kielly opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the first period with his 11th goal of the season. Ryan MacKinnon and Daniel Sprong drew assists.

Shots were 17-8 in favour of Charlottetown.

In the second period, the Islanders took a 2-0 lead with Ross Johnston’s fourth goal of the season on the power play at 3:29. Luc Deschenes and Dexter Weber drew assists.

Gatineau scored at the 17:10 mark to make it a one-goal game with Jonathon Masters picking up his first career QMJHL goal. Tommy Veilleux and Alexandre Carrier drew assists.

Jonathan Bourcier tied the game at 19:42 with his ninth goal of the season. Mickael Beauregard and Elie Berube drew assists.

Shots were 12-9 in favour of the Islanders.

The Olympiques took a 3-2 lead at 13:45 of the third period with a goal from former Rocket forward Louick Marcotte for his 24th of the season. Yan Pavel Laplante and Berube drew assists.

With the extra attacker on the ice, Filip Chlapik found the back of the net at 19:03 to tie the game with his 18th goal of the season. Weber and MacKinnon drew assists.
