Islanders pick up first win of 2015 with 5-4 victory over Sea Dogs
Daniel Sprong and Alex Goulet each had a goal and two assists to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 5-4 win over the visiting Saint John Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon at Eastlink Centre.
Sprong scored the game winning goal with 6:52 remaining to help the Islanders snap a brief two-game losing and streak and improve to 20-19-1-1 on the season.
“We came into the zone and I thought Goulet was going to drop it but he gave it to (Filip) Chlapik and the defence stayed with Goulet and I just went to the net. Filip has a great pass and I just put my stick down and it went in.”
Saint John drops to 23-11-1-4.
The Islanders came back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits before breaking a 3-3 tie in the third period.
It was a good bounce back, said Sprong.
“We got into a bit of penalty trouble but we made sure we kept the momentum going after each big kill and we are happy with the win. Now we are getting ready for Friday night against Blainville.”
The win also mark’s the clubs fifth-straight win at home.
“We’re playing good in front of our home crowd,” said Sprong. “We wanted to be successful here. At the beginning of the year we weren’t successful here and we want the fans to come out and support us and to do that we have to put wins on the board and that’s what we’ve been doing.”
Saint John opened the scoring with a power play marker at the 12:32 mark of the first period coming off the stick of Olivier LeBlanc for his fourth of the season. Mitchell Dempsey drew the lone assist.
The Sea Dogs took a 2-0 lead with Nathan Noel converting on a back door play at 14:23 for his 13th goal of the season. Mark Tremaine and Spencer Smallman drew assists.
Goulet made it a 2-1 game with his 22nd goal of the season at 16:11 with Sprong and Ryan MacKinnon drawing assists.
Shots were 11-10 in favour of Saint John.
The second period begun four-on-four and Spenser Cobbold tied the game just 51 seconds into the period with his fifth goal of the season. Goulet drew the lone assist.
Just moments later, Justice Dundas gave Saint John a 3-2 lead at 1:39 with his 14th goal of the season. Noel drew the lone assist.
Chlapik’s 17th goal of the season tied the game 3-3 with 1:05 remaining on the clock. Sprong and Dexter Weber drew assists. Shots were 9-8 Saint John.
In the third period, former Sea Dogs forward Oliver Cooper gave the Islanders a 4-3 lead with his 11th goal of the season at 10:33. Ross Johnston and David Henley drew assists.
Sprong made it 5-3 with his 22nd goal of the season with Chlapik and Goulet picking up assists.
On a power play, Matthew Highmore made it a 5-4 game at 16:56 with Dempsey and Luke Green drawing assists.
Mason McDonald made 24 saves in the win for Charlottetown. Alex Bishop made 25 saves in the loss for Saint John.
The Islanders host the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada Friday Jan. 9, 2015 at 7 p.m. EST.
