The Charlottetown Islanders picked up goaltender Chase Marchand via waivers yesterday from the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League.

Marchand, 19, is an Upper Tantallon, N.S. native who played in 12 games with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last season, sporting a 5-6 win-loss record with a 2.85 goals against average and a 0.894 save percentage.

Islanders General Manager Grant Sonier said Marchand is a free agent goaltender the team wants to look at.

“He has some experience in the league and has had success while developing. It is an important position that has to be filled and we want to have the right teammate in place.”

Marchand was a 10th round pick by the Eagles in 2012 and was picked up by Mississauga last season via waivers. In four games with the Steelheads, the six-foot, 168-pound frame posted an 0-3 record with a 5.57 goals against average and a 0.866 save percentage.

Marchand has already joined the team in training camp.
