Bring on Sherbrooke: Playoff preview



After a wild 7-6 win over the Moncton Wildcats on Saturday, the Charlottetown secured the ninth overall spot in the QMJHL standings and will face-off against the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the opening round of the 2015 Playoffs.

Sherbrooke lost 7-3 Saturday night to Rouyn-Noranda, dropping Sherbrooke to the eighth overall spot.

Charlottetown and Sherbrooke met twice during the season, which each team taking a win in the opponent's barn.

The first meeting was Nov. 28, 2014 when the Phoenix erased a 2-0 deficit to score in the final minute to take a 3-2 decision. The next meeting came Jan. 16 in Sherbrooke when Mason McDonald made 31 saves to record his first shutout as an Islander in a 2-0 win.

Charlottetown finished the season with three 30-plus goal scorers for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Sherbrooke only had one 30-plus goal scorer this season.

The series gets underway Friday March 27 in Sherbrooke at 8 p.m. AST.
Taking a look at Sherbrooke
Sherbrooke finished eighth overall with a 36-26-2-4 record with 78 points. At home, Sherbrooke posted a 22-9-2-1 record and on the road they went 14-17-0-3.

The Phoenix was led by Daniel Audette (29-44-73), Kay Schweri (12-56-68) and Tim Wieser (38-28-68) during the regular season.

Both goaltenders saw quite a bit of action.

Starter Alex Bureau posted a 21-16 won-lost record with a 3.37 goals against average and a 0.883 save percentage. Evan Fitzpatrick, Sherbrooke's fourth overall pick in 2014, posted a 13-15 record with a 3.41 goals against average and a 0.884 save percentage.

Taking a look at Charlottetown
Charlottetown finished ninth overall with a 35-28-1-4 record with 75 points. Islanders were 18-12-1-3 at home while they boosted the league's fourth best road record of 17-16-0-1.

Daniel Sprong (39-49-88), Filip Chlapik (33-42-75) and Alexandre Goulet (35-26-61) led the way offensively for the Islanders. Ryan MacKinnon finished seventh among QMJHL defenceman in scoring with 10 goals and 50 points.

Mason McDonald played the fourth most minutes in the league this year at 3194:01. McDonald appeared in 56 games posting a 28-26 won-lost record with a 3.06 goals against average and a 0.906 save percentage (second in the league).

Islanders Country Predictions
Nolan Reid - Islanders in 7 games.
Islanders have the better goaltender in Mason McDonald and are bigger and more physical which will wear down Sherbrooke within a few games. Both teams are evenly matched which will make a great seven-game series.

Nathan A'Hearn - Islanders in 7 games.
Islanders goaltending and big bodies will prevail in seven games.
