Islanders begin trip with 8-5 loss to Sagueneens
It was a game of old-time hockey Thursday night at the Centre Georges-Vezina in Chicoutimi, Que.
Alexandre Ranger scored four goals and an assist, also adding a fight to the count, to lead the Chicoutimi Sagueneens to an 8-5 win over the visiting Charlottetown Islanders for its fifth-straight win. Chicoutimi improves to 14-15-2-0 on the season. Sagueneens defenceman Brian Lovell had a career game with two goals and an assist.
Alexandre Goulet scored three goals for the Islanders who drop to 15-16-1-1 on the season. Daniel Sprong and Ryan MacKinnon added a goal and two assists each.
Both teams combined for 90 penalty minutes and 50 of those minutes in fighting majors.
The Islanders opened the scoring with a power play marker from Goulet for his first of the game and 15th of the season at 3:19. MacKinnon and Kameron Kielly drew assists.
Chicoutimi tied the game at 9:51 with Ranger’s 11th of the season with Brian Lovell and Samuel Hodhod drawing assists. The Sagueneens took a 2-1 lead at 15:34 with Ranger’s second of the game. Carl Tremblay drew the lone assist.
Goulet tied the game with his second of the game at 19:54. Sprong and Dexter Weber drew assists. Shots were 9-9.
In the second period, Lovell’s second goal of the season gave Chicoutimi a 3-2 lead at 5:28 with Ranger and Laurent Dauphin drawing assists.
Sprong’s 16th goal of the season on the power play tied the game at three apiece at 12:03. MacKinnon and Kielly drew assists.
The Sagueneens scored at 16:22 with Jeremy Lepine’s fifth goals of the season. Just 18 seconds later, the lead was increased to 5-3 with Samuel Roussy’s fourth goal of the season.
Goulet scored his third of the game with a power play marker at 18:35, to make it a 5-4 game.
Shots were 15-15.
Chicoutimi regained the two-goal lead with Ranger’s third goal of the game and 13th of the season just 47 seconds into the third period. Samuel Hodhod and Roussy drew assists. That goal would spoil the night for Islanders starter Mason McDonald after allowing six goals on 25 shots.
Lovell’s second of the game made it 7-4 Sagueneens at 4:22 with Janne Puhakka and Nicolas Roy drawing assists.
Ranger’s fourth goal of the game made it 8-4 Chicoutimi at 12:29 with a power play marker. Roy and Sebastien Gauthier drew assists.
Charlottetown wrapped up the scoring with MacKinnon scoring his fifth of the season at 16:45 on the power play. Sprong and Weber drew assists.
Julio Billia made 30 saves in the winning goal for Chicoutimi. Daryl MacCallum made four saves on six shots in relief of McDonald.
The Islanders visit the Baie-Comeau Drakkar tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. AST.
Islanders Insights:
-Islanders were 4-for-10 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
-Islanders edged the Sagueneens in hits, 11-10.
-Kameron Kielly was a fantastic 16-for-25 in the face-off dot.
