Trade Period Flashback, 2012-13

Troy Vance

The trading period begins today, Islanders Country will take a look at previous trade period movement made by the Rocket/Islanders.

Please note, seasons 2006-07 and beyond are archived by the QMJHL with full trades.

We will take a look at the 2012-13 trade period.

The trading period opened on Dec. 22, 2012 and came to a a close on Jan. 8, 2013. The Rocket had a 20-14-2-0 record at the start of the trading period.

Only three trades were made the Rocket.

The first trade was made on opening day sending forward Kelly Bent, 17, to Gatineau straight-up for defenceman Anthony Cortese, 18.

On Dec. 28, 2012, the Rocket made its second trade and it was very minor. The team traded goalie prospect Jeremy Gallant, 19, to the Halifax Mooseheads for forward Craig MacLauchlan, 18.

On deadline day, the Rocket traded rookie defenceman Mark Trickett, 17, prospect Carl Chenier, 17, and a third-round pick in 2014 to the Victoriaville Tigres for defenceman Troy Vance, 20, and a fifth-round pick in 2014.

Analysis:
Very good trade period for the Rocket, who ended up finishing the season with 41 wins. They didn't add too much and moves were only small to not mess with the chemistry on the team.

Trading Bent for Cortese was a steal for the Rocket, and finally came out winners on a trade.

Cortese was an offensive-defenceman and finished the season with three goals and eight points in 27 games with the Rocket. The following season as an Islander, Cortese scored eight goals and 33 points in 68 games. Cortese could have been an overage player with the Islanders this season but the Islanders opted to release him.

Bent on the other hand, was a former fourth round pick by P.E.I. in 2011 and only suited up in 21 games in a season and a half. Since being traded, Bent has been a well traveled player as he played for Saint John last season and now currently playing for Halifax. Bent has scored seven goals and 17 points in 111 games between Gatineau, Saint John and Halifax since being traded from the Rocket.

Acquiring Vance stabilized the team's blue-line for the rest of the year. Vance ended the year scoring a goal and eight points with a plus-18 rating in 28 games. He returned the following season as an overage and was named an assistant captain. The Dallas Stars prospect scored eight goals and 29 points in 59 games.

Trickett, a second round pick by P.E.I., would play 18 games with Victoriaville that season picking up three assists before being traded to Acadie-Bathurst after 38 games the following season. Trickett currently has a goal and 11 points in 36 games with the Titan.

Acquiring MacLauchlan was an emergency move at the time and he would only skate in three games. He would become a full-time player the next season, playing third-and fourth line time while also getting time on the team's top penalty killing unit. He scored two goals and six points in 57 games last season with the Islanders.
