The trading period is approaching so in preparation, Islanders Country will take a look at previous trade period movement made by the Rocket/Islanders.
Please note, seasons 2006-07 and beyond are archived by the QMJHL with full trades.
To get things started, we will start with the 2006-2007 season.
The trading period opened up on Dec. 18, 2006 and closed on Jan. 5, 2007. Going into the trade period, the P.E.I. Rocket held a 17-14-1-4 record with 39 points.
The first trade made was the Rocket sending 18-year-old forward David Petardi to the Val-d'Or Foreurs for a seventh-round pick in 2007. Petardi never played a single game for either team.
On Dec. 20, 2007, the Rocket made their biggest move of the trade period and perhaps one of the biggest trades in the league that season.
Brett Morrison |
Morrison would score 12 goals and 36 points in 28 games with the Rocket. Gervais would score four goals and 15 points in 33 games.
Three days later, the Rocket acquired 20-year-old defenceman Luciano Lommano and a third-round pick in 2008 for 18-year-old defenceman Stephen Lund.
Lund was a fifth overall pick by P.E.I. in 2005 and scored two goals and nine points in 90 regular season games with the Rocket in one and a half seasons.
Lommano scored four goals and 21 points in 34 games with the Rocket.
On Jan. 3, 2007, the Rocket traded 19-year-old Tyler Hawes and 17-year-old Benoit Levesque to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for a second-round pick in 2007.
Finally, the Rocket wrapped up the trade period acquiring 19-year-old tough-guy Sebastien Laferriere from the Val-d'Or Foreurs in return for Val-d'Or's own seventh-round pick in 2007.
Analysis:
It seems like the Rocket did both buying and selling.
The biggest asset from the trading period, Morrison and Gervais, were shipped out the following season.
This was my first season of being a season ticket holder with the Rocket and didn't quite understand the model of building a major junior team. At the time, I thought the trades were great.
Most trades worked out OK for the Rocket, but worked out better for the opponent.
Morrison and Gervais would be dealt at the following season's trade period, as Mior would lead the Gatineau Olympiques to a Presidents Cup championship and a Memorial Cup appearance.
Hawes went on to have a terrific season and a half with the Huskies scoring 29 goals and 44 points in 68 games during his last season. He was joined by Morrison and led the Huskies to the QMJHL finals.
Levesque would later bloom with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, winning a Presidents Cup in 2009.
Lund lasted 55 games with the Mooseheads over the next two seasons recording one goal and 11 points.
Stay tuned for the 2007-08 edition of Trade Flashback.
