The shutout is McDonald’s second of his career which helps the Islanders improve to 21-19-1-3 on the season. Sherbrooke falls to 23-16-1-3.
McDonald last recorded a shutout with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Jan. 27, 2013. Since being acquired by the Islanders, it took the 18-year-old, Halifax, N.S., native 54 games and 3,093:26 of playing time to get the achievement with Charlottetown.
Charlottetown scored a paired of goals in the first period and then let McDonald shut the door the rest of the way.
Alexandre Goulet opened the scoring at the 12:59 mark of the first period with an unassisted marker for his team-leading 25th goal of the season.
Charlottetown increased the lead to 2-0 with Filip Chlapik burying his 19th goal of the season at 19:20. Daniel Sprong and Guillaume Rioux-Legault drew assists. Shots were 11-10 Sherbrooke.
The second period was scoreless but saw the Phoenix hold a 12-9 advantage in shots. Sherbrooke dominated a majority of the play and couldn’t convert on power play mid-way through the period.
The third period was also scoreless but this time the Islanders had a 9-8 shot advantage.
Evan Fitzpatrick took the loss for Sherbrooke making 26 saves.
Charlottetown continues its three-in-three road trip tomorrow night in Victoriaville for a 5 p.m. AST puck drop.
