Screaming Eagles take 2-1 win over Islanders



The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored a pair of first period goals to hold on for a 2-1 win over the visiting Charlottetown Islanders Friday night.

The Islanders lose its second-straight game after winning four-in-a-row and are now an even 19-19-1-1 on the season. Cape Breton improves to 13-20-2-3 on the season.

Cape Breton opened the scoring at the 8:01 mark with Marcus Hinds finding the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Francis Brunelle and Colby Tower drew assists. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead off the stick of Maxim Lazarev for his 19th goal of the season at 18:24. Evgeny Svechnikov and Hinds drew assists. Shots were 7-4 in favour of Cape Breton.

The second period was scoreless, but the Islanders had a 13-12 shot advantage.

In the third period, Bradley Kennedy scored his 10th of the season on the power play at 13:22 to bring the Islanders to within a goal. Kameron Kielly and Mason McDonald drew assists.

Shots were 13-5 Charlottetown but they could not manage to tie the game.

Miguel Sullivan made 29 saves in the win for Cape Breton. McDonald took the loss making 22 saves to be named the game’s third star.

The Islanders return home Sunday Jan. 4, for a 3 p.m. tilt against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
