Charlottetown Islanders. Nolan Reid photo.

The Charlottetown Islanders unveiled its 2014-15 season roster yesterday during the Islanders Street Hockey Jambouree on Kent. St.

The roster consists of two goaltenders, nine defencemen and 13 forwards.

Among the 24 skaters, three are from Charlottetown; one from Summerside, four hail from Fredericton, N.B., four from Nova Scotia, five from Quebec, one from Sweden and one from the Czech Republic.

There are currently four overage 20-year-old players, four 19-year-olds, six 18-year-olds, seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-old players.

Islanders General Manager Grant Sonier said the team feels good about themselves for the upcoming season.

“We’ve talked a lot about changes that we’ve made and the direction the team is going but what’s most important now is we let nature take its course.

“We’ve got some depth at every position now and youth at every position and we’ve sprinkled in some real good leadership and veteran players. We hope that speeds the process up and process is the key word.”

The coaching staff is demanding of hard work, said Sonier.

“It’s non-negotiable with our franchise. You have to work hard.”

Islanders Captain Ryan MacKinnon said this year’s team has the most skilled players he has ever seen.

“There’s incredible talent in the dressing room. I know last year they struggled at times but everyone that was a year younger is older now and they’ve done a great job in bringing in experience which is definitely going to help.”

The 20-year-old Summerside native said the whole team is excited for the season.

“It’s been a long training camp and long summer. I know everyone in the dressing room is pretty anxious to finally get started and it’s just around the corner so we’re working hard to make sure we’re ready for opening day.”

Goaltender Mason McDonald is also excited to get the season started.

“It’s been a long training camp so far and its been fun. We have a great group of guys, it’s a new group, it’s young and I think it’s going to be an exciting season.”

McDonald sees a fast team who isn’t afraid of being tough.

“We are going to have a lot more offense than we did last year, we are going to be better defensively and we definitely have some toughness with Ross (Johnston)…I think we have a well rounded team.”

The Islanders have two more pre-season games left on Friday Sept. 5 in Saint John and Saturday Sept. 6 at home versus the Sea Dogs. Charlottetown opens the season at home on Sept. 12 against the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Isles return defenceman Smith; lose Marchand to waivers

The Charlottetown Islanders have returned rookie defenceman Andrew Smith to Midget AAA, the team announced today.

Smith, 16, was drafted 34th overall in the second round by the Islanders in this past Summer's draft. The Boisbriand, Que. native skated in four pre-season games with the Islanders collecting 14 penalty minutes and a minus-one rating.

Smith will return to his Midget AAA team Saint-Eustache Vikings where he scored a goal and seven points in 42 games last season.

In a team press release, Islanders General Manager Grant Sonier said the team was very pleased with the camp Smith had, but was best to send him to midget to continue his development.

"Our players showed up ready for camp which has made it a very competitive process."

Chase Marchand

Goaltender Chase Marchand, who the Islanders claimed off waivers though the OHL last week, was claimed by the Victoriaville Tigres in today's mandatory 19-year-old waiver draft.

The 19-year-old Upper Tantallon, N.S. native appeared in 50:40 of playing time in two pre-season games with the Islanders posting a 7.11 goals against average and a 0.857 save percentage.

Islanders down Wildcats 7-5 in exhibition play

Kameron Kielly and Daniel Sprong each had a pair of goals to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 7-5 pre-season win over the Moncton Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the APM Centre in Cornwall.

The Islanders pick up their second straight pre-season win and improve to 2-2-0-0. The Wildcats fall to 2-2-0-0 in the pre-season.

Kielly also added a pair of assists for a four-point game.

"Our team brought a lot of character," said Kielly. "We are going to come out and compete every night and stick up for one another. Those are the three most important things and we brought it all tonight."

It was pretty physical affair as each team had 22 minutes in penalties. Kielly expected it to be a physical game.

“It’s a good rivalry with them. We’re stepping up every time we play them for sure.”

Islanders forward Oliver Cooper, who had a goal and an assist, said there’s always rivalries with Maritime teams, especially Moncton.

“They’re always in your face…so you got to respond to that and give it back to them. I think we did a good job of that today, sticking up for each other and sticking up for ourselves and not taking anything from them.”

Cooper said it was a good game.

"We still have a lot to work on over the season but everyone competed and there's lots of positives."

The Wildcats were quick to open the scoring as Liam Murphy scored his second of the pre-season just 56 seconds in.

Daniel Sprong replied for the Islanders ripping a wrist shot past Cats starter Alex Dubeau at 7:15. Cooper drew the lone assist. The Islanders took a 2-1 lead at 17:51 with a power play marker with Cooper. Kielly and Ryan MacKinnon added assists.

"Unbelievable passes by Kielly and Ryan," said Cooper on his goal. "I was just fortunate enough to be in the right spot...nothing special just right timing I guess."

In the second period, Kielly scored his first of the game and second of the pre-season at 1:29 to give Islanders a 3-1 lead. Will Thompson and Luc Deschenes drew assists. Kielly added his second of the game to give the Islanders a three-goal lead at 8:46 with Deschenes and Alex Goulet drawing assists. Sprong scored his second of the game at 18:05 to make it 5-1 Islanders. Kielly and Dexter Weber drew assists. Just 19 seconds later, Julien Avon scored his second pre-season goal to give the Islanders a five-goal cushion. Moncton was quick to respond as Kyle Tibbo made it a 6-2 game just 14 seconds later. Shots were 20-9 in favour of Charlottetown.

The Wildcats made it a three-goal game at 6:48 of the third period with a power play tally from Alexandre Jacob.

At the 9:52 mark, Kielly and Moncton Wildcats forward Connor Garland were both given 10-minute misconduct and were out for the rest of the game.

“Just a couple of words shared,” said Kielly. “I’m not supposed to like him, he’s a good player on that team. I was getting in his head a little…I guess the linesmen had enough.”

Spenser Cobbold gave the Islanders a 7-3 lead taking a beautiful pass from Sprong at 15:32. Lucas Sangster drew the second assist on the goal.

Moncton made it interesting at the 17:00 mark with Benji Curtis scoring his second of the pre-season before Lane Cormier scored at 18:46 on the power play to come within two of the Islanders.

Mason McDonald started for the Islanders and allowed one goal on 15 shots in 29:20 played. Chase Marchand allowed four goals on 21 shots in 30:40 played. Marchand was credited with the win.

Dubeau started for Moncton and allowed four goals on 24 shots in 29:20 played. Alex Kelly finished the game for Moncton going 14-for-17 between the pipes. Kelly was credited with the loss.

The Islanders will be unveiling its 2014-15 season roster on Aug. 30 during the Islanders Hockey Jambouree on Kent St.

Charlottetown’s next pre-season game is Friday Sept. 5 in Saint John at 7:30 p.m. and then return home Saturday Sept. 6 to host Saint John at the Eastlink Centre at 7 p.m.

Following today’s game, forwards Malik Johnson and Josh Shatford, along with defenceman Duncan McKie have been returned to their respective MHL teams.

Team White takes final intersquad game 6-3

Team White skated to a 6-3 win over Team Black in the third and final intersquad game tonight in Pownal.

A line of Daniel Sprong, Alexandre Goulet and Oliver Cooper combined for four of the six Team White goals.

Cooper, acquired from the Saint John Sea Dogs in the offseason, said he can't remember the last time he played with three good players like that.

"It makes the game a lot easier than it should be. They're unbelievable players."

It was a high tempo intersquad game, said Cooper.

"It gives the chance for the guys to kinda get used to some line combinations for the exhibition games."

Logan Cooke, a goaltending hopeful to crack the roster, said it was a good game.

"The boys gave me a chance to stop the puck and were battling hard."

Cooke said he needs to work hard to earn that back-up position behind Mason McDonald this year.

"Prove everyday when you come to the rink that you're ready and you want to be here, stay motivated and battle hard."

Cooper, Sprong and Goulet scored in the first period to give Team White a 3-0 lead.

Sprong added his second of the game in the second period to increase Team White's lead to 4-0. The second period saw the first fight of the intersquad games with Zach Beaton and Samuel Jutras going toe-to-toe.

Ross Johnston put Team Black on the board before Spenser Cobbold made it a 4-2 game. Curtis Scales gave Team White a 5-2 lead before Zach Beaton made it 6-2. Kameron Kielly capped off the scoring, bringing Team Black within three.

Cobbold, who is fighting for the final overage spot on the team, said there's good competition for the spot.

"I just gotta come in day in and day out and work hard and just hope for the best."

Teams are only allowed to carry three overage players every season.

Mason McDonald allowed no goals during his time in goal for Team White. Luke House allowed three goals to share the win for Team White.

Darryl MacCallum started the game for Team Black allowed four goals. Cooke finished the game allowing two goals.

Team White used the shootout to get by Team Black 7-6 tonight during the second intersquad game in Pownal.

Nathan Yetman and Mike DiPaolo scored shootout goals in a six-round shootout. Hunter Luhmann scored the lone shootout goal for Team White.

Team White was led by Islanders hopeful Keith Getson with two goals.

Getson said it was a good game and he worked as hard as he could.

"It was pretty fun with that shootout there…it was pretty crazy.”

The 16-year-old Bridgewater, N.S. native said he needs to work as hard as he can to make this year’s roster.

“I need to do everything I can and play my game.”

Returning forward Liam Alcalde scored two goals for Team Black, and now has three goals through two intersquad games.

It was a high tempo game, said Alcalde.

“All the boys are trying to get spots so everyone is going 100 per cent. I like the way I’ve been playing and everyone else is playing pretty well.”

Alcalde doesn’t want to think he’s on the outside looking in to make this year’s team but said he always has to work hard.

“With the type of player I am, no matter what I’m always going to be on the outside. I think I have myself penciled in right now and I hope it stays that way.”

Team White took a 4-0 lead with Getson opening the scoring followed by Mitchell Balmas tallying a goal and Getson scoring his second. Morgan McDonald added a single to increase the White lead. Alcalde made it a 4-1 game with a wrist shot beating goalie Grant Grady. Samuel Jutras cut the lead to 4-2 for Team Black.

Team Black takes first scrimmage in overtime

Mike DiPaolo scored the lone shootout goal to give Team Black an 8-7 win over Team White in the intersquad game this evening in Pownal.

Islanders hopefuls Mailk Johnson and Lucas Sangster had multi-point games for Team Black, as Daniel Sprong was dominate for Team White with two goals and an assist.

Sangster, a 17-year-old Amherst, N.S. native, said it was a good, fast paced game.

“I was just really trying to keep it simple. The boys were real good, they were always out there giving (you) good outlets, they were always open.”

To make the opening roster on Sept. 12, Sangster said he has to keep his game simple and play solid defence.

“I mean, if I can keep play offensively, play physical, always be there for my teammates and try to have a positive roll.”

Filip Rydstrom, who suited up for Team White, said the first day of training camp is always going to be hard in the beginning.

“We’re getting used to it and it feels better and better.”

Today was the first time a majority of the players stepped onto the ice for the first time in two-three months. Rydstrom was last on the ice last Wednesday back home in Stockholm, Sweden.

Spenser Cobbold, Liam Alcade, Bradley Kennedy, Samuel Jutras, Johnson and Sangster scored goals for Team Black.

Curtis Scales, Luc Deschenes, Mitchell Balmas, Alexandre Goulet, Rydstrom and Sprong scored for Team White.

The two teams were tied 7-7 after three 25-minute periods and needed a shootout decide the winner.

Darryl MacCallum and Grant Grady split the win for Team Black, while Luke House and Logan Cookie took the loss for Team White.

Practices resume tomorrow with Group B practicing at 9 a.m. and Group A practicing at 11 a.m. The goalies will have a skate from 10:15-10:45 a.m. The second intersquad game goes Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Pownal.

Paolo to attend Islanders camp for 48 hours

Recently acquired defenceman Gianni Paolo says he will attend Charlottetown Islanders' training camp, only for 48 hours.

Paolo shared a Google Doc to the public to clear up confusion with what has happened between trades he had been involved in with Charlottetown and the Portland Jr. Pirates.

In the text, Paolo said he had no knowledge that he was getting traded to Charlottetown until General Manager Grant Sonier called him and explained the Islanders were going to acquire him.

"As for the Q being completely ruled out, that is not the case," Paolo wrote.

He is happy with his decision on playing with the South Shore Kings coached by Scott Harlow for the upcoming season.

Paolo also wrote he will be paying his own way to attend Charlottetown's training camp.

"I am interested in meeting the staff, seeing the facilities and seeing longtime friend Daniel Sprong."

Sonier tweeted yesterday, the Islanders are hoping Paolo will attend camp after the Beantown Classic tournament.

You can read the full Google Doc from Paolo here.
