Brassard shines in return to Charlottetown; Remparts edge Islanders 4-3
Quebec Remparts goaltender Eric Brassard made 42 saves in his return to Charlottetown as the Quebec Remparts edged the Charlottetown Islanders 4-3 Saturday night at Eastlink Centre.
The Islanders have dropped two straight games and are 6-7-1-1 on the season. The Remparts improve to 10-5-0-0 on the season.
Brassard, who played with the Islanders last season, said it was different for him but was happy his team came out with the win.
“I got to play against my friends on the old team but it was a special game for me.”
The effort earned Brassard first star honours.
Islanders forward Daniel Sprong, who scored a penalty shot goal late in the third period, said the Islanders played a playoff-like game.
“We battled a full 60 (minutes). We made some little mistakes but we’re happy with our effort, but just not the bounces we got and it’s a tough loss.”
The Remparts are a team who plays off of turnovers, said Sprong.
“Their first line is very strong…when we played our system they didn’t really have any good chances, they only got chances when we didn’t have a third guy high and they were off the rush. It is what it is.”
Second-year Islanders forward Alexandre Goulet said the team deserved a better outcome.
“We played hard for 60 minutes and had some bad bounces. We have to play the same way for tomorrow.”
Quebec opened the scoring at the 11:39 mark with Kurt Etchegary scoring his second of the season. Adam Erne and Simon Boudreau drew assists. The Islanders tied the game with Goulet’s team-leading eighth goal of the season at 16:22. Sprong and Filip Chlapik drew assists. Shots were 14-10 in favour of Quebec.
In the second period, the Remparts scored two quick early goals to take a 3-1 lead. First it was Etchegary scoring his second of the game at 3:52 from Dmytro Timashov and Olivier Thibodeau. Moments later at the 4:44 mark, Zachery Moody scored his third goal of the season from Marcus Cuomo and Nikolas Brouillard.
Charlottetown came within a goal with Oliver Cooper burying his third of the season on the power play at 14:10. Kameron Kielly and Dexter Weber drew assists. Shots in the second were 15-9 for Charlottetown.
In the third period, Taylor Burke regained the Remparts’ two-goal lead with his fourth of the season at 14:15. Moody and Cuomo drew assists.
At 17:10, Sprong was awarded a penalty and took advantage by beating Brassard for his sixth of the season.
Sprong said him and Brassard used to do shootouts at the end of practices last season.
“He kind of knew my move so I wanted to surprise him, come in slow…he kind of moved when I faked it first and it knew it was there so I put it in. Kind of got a lucky bounce but it’s about time we got those bounces.”
Islanders outshot the Remparts 20-7 in the third period.
Brassard made 42 saves in the win for Quebec. Mason McDonald took the loss for Charlottetown making 26 saves.
The Islanders are back it Sunday afternoon when they host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at 3 p.m.
