The Sea Dogs temporary jump into first place in the Maritimes Division with a 4-1-0-2 record with 10 points. The Islanders remain in second place in the division with a 4-2-1-1 record with 10 points.
Mark Tremaine led the way for Saint John with a goal and two helpers as Alexandre Goulet led the way for Charlottetown with a pair of goals.
Saint John jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:27 mark of the first period with Tremaine’s third goal of the season. Justice Dundas and Braydon Blight drew assists. Islanders held a 10-8 advantage in shots.
In the second period, Adam Marsh gave the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead with a power play goal coming exactly five minutes into the period. The goal was Marsh’s fourth of the season and Tremaine and Jakub Zboril drew assists.
Just 1:33 later, the Islanders struck back with a power play goal of their own off the stick of Daniel Spring for his fourth goal of the season. Ryan MacKinnon and Bradley Kennedy drew assists.
The Islanders tied the game at two with Luc Deschenes letting a shot go from the point that beat Sea Dogs goalie Sebastien Auger for his first of the season at 12:16. Samuel Guilbault and Julien Avon drew assists. The Sea Dogs held a 14-13 shot advantage.
In the third period, Mathieu Joseph gave the Sea Dogs a 3-2 lead at 2:41 with his second goal of the season. Thomas Chabot and Olivier LeBlanc drew assist.
Charlottetown tied the game up once again with Goulet’s third goal of the season at 5:46. Dexter Weber and Kameron Kielly drew assists.
Goulet gave the Islanders their first lead of the game with a power play goal at 14:03. Spenser Cobbold and Kielly drew assists.
The lead wouldn’t last long as LeBlanc tied the game at four at 16:15 with his second of the season. Tremaine drew the lone assist. Shots were 11-8 in favour of Charlottetown.
Overtime solved nothing but saw the Sea Dogs outshoot the Islanders 4-0 to even the shot clock to 34 apiece. Will Thompson took a boarding penalty 1:27 into OT but the Islanders managed to kill it off.
Islanders shooters Kielly, Sprong and Filip Chlapik were all stopped in the shootout. Adam Marsh was stopped before Noel found the back of the net to seal the victory for Saint John.
Auger made 30 saves in the win for Saint John. Mason McDonald made 30 saves in the loss for Charlottetown.
The Islanders return to the Eastlink Centre for back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday. On Friday the Islanders host the defending President Cup Champions Val-d’Or Foreurs at 7 p.m. and then take on the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
