Sea Dogs hand Islanders Thanksgiving loss



The Saint John Sea Dogs scored two goals 1:35 apart in the first period and never looked back as they downed the Charlottetown Islanders 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.

Charlottetown has now lost three games in a row and drop to 5-5-1-1 on the season. The Sea Dogs remain top of the Maritimes Division with a 7-2-0-2 record.

Justin Dundas scored a pair of goals as Spencer Smallman and Adam Marsh added single tallies for the Sea Dogs. Daniel Sprong had the lone goal for the Islanders.

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring at the 13:06 mark of the first period with Dundas scoring a highlight reel breakaway goal for his fourth of the season. Olivier LeBlanc and Mathieu Joseph drew assists. Moments later, Smallman gave the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead at 14:51 with his fourth of the season. Smallman shot the puck from behind the net and found its way in. Nathan Noel and Marsh drew assists. Shots were 17-14 in favour of Charlottetown.

In the second period, the Islanders cut the lead in half with Sprong’s fifth goal of the season at 8:33. Spenser Cobbold and Ryan MacKinnon drew assists.

Just 1:10 later, Marsh regained the two-goal Sea Dogs lead with his sixth of the season with the assist being credited to Matthew Highmore. Shot were an even 10-10.

Dundas capped off the scoring with an empty net goal at 18:58 of the third period. Shots were 11-9 Saint John.

Sebastien Auger was named the game’s second star making 35 saves. Mason McDonald took the loss for Charlottetown making 31 saves.

The Islanders return home on Friday Oct. 17 to battle the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

Islanders Insights
-Islanders were 0-for-4 on the power play.

-Rookie Samuel Guilbault led the Islanders with six shots on goal; three of which were considered dangerous.

-David Henley led the Islanders in hits with four.

-Kameron Kielly was 70 per cent on the draw, winning 7-of-10 of face-offs.

-Cobbold’s assist with his 10th of the season. He leads all Islanders players in that category.
