Huskies special teams hurts Islanders

Penalties cost the Charlottetown Islanders in a 7-0 loss to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Saturday night at Eastlink Centre during Pink in the Rink night.

The Huskies scored five power play goals on seven opportunities.

It’s attention to detail that just wasn’t there for the Islanders tonight, said Islanders captain Ryan MacKinnon.

“Last night we had a great special teams but in this league I’ve learned to show up every night and obviously we didn’t do that tonight.”

With the Huskies being almost perfect on the power play, they were however perfect on the penalty kill, killing off all 10 Islanders' power plays.

“It’s obvious bounces weren’t going our way,” said MacKinnon. “When that’s happening in a game you just got to learn how to simplify things and we didn’t show that tonight. It’s definitely something we need to work on.”

The loss drops the Islanders to 5-3-1-1 on the season as the Huskies improve to 5-5-0-0.

Huskies Captain Ryan Penny led the way with three goals.

The Huskies held period leads of 2-0 and 4-0 before adding three more in the third period.

It’s a tough loss to swallow especially for being on a such a special night, said MacKinnon.

“Breast Cancer affects so many, especially for me. There’s people in my life that are affected by it and I know there’s several others.”

Julien Nantel opened the scoring on the power play at 5:58 of the first period with his third goal of the season. Penny added a second power play goal to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at 11:42 with his first of the game and eighth of the season.

The Islanders had six straight power play opportunities in the second period but could not convert. When the favour returned to the Huskies, Mathieu Lemay potted a power play goal at 12:34 for his fifth of the season. Huskies added a fourth power play goal at 19:56 off the stick of Penny for his second of the game.

To start the third period, starter Mason McDonald was replaced by Daryl MacCallum.

Penny completed that hat trick at the eight minute mark with an even strength goal to make it 5-0 Huskies. The Huskies took a 6-0 lead with Jeremy Auger scoring on the power play at 12:43. Auger capped off the scoring at 17:07 with a short-handed marker.

Samuel Harvey recorded the shutout making 30 saves.

McDonald took the loss stopping 19 shots through two periods. MacCallum made four saves.

The Islanders return to action Friday Oct. 10 in Halifax for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
