Mooseheads hand Islanders second straight loss



Vincent Watt’s third period stood as the game winner as the Halifax Mooseheads defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 3-2 Friday night at Scotiabank Centre.

The Islanders have lost two straight games and see their record fall to 5-4-1-1 on the season. The Mooseheads improve to 3-4-1-1 and pick up their second win of the season over the Islanders.

Timo Meier, Danny Moynihan and Watt scored for the Mooseheads as Oliver Cooper and Filip Chlapik scored for the Islanders.

Meier opened the scoring at the 16:49 mark of the first period with his fifth of the season on a backhand shot that beat Islanders goalie Mason McDonald through the five-hole. Jean-Sebastien Taillefer and Austyn Hardie drew assists.

The Mooseheads took a 2-0 lead with Moynihan’s third goal of the season at 19:26 from Philippe Gadoury and Mogan Nauss. Shots were 12-8 in favour of the Islanders.

The second period saw no scoring, but the Mooseheads held a 14-3 shot advantage after three power play opportunities.

In the third period, Watt gave the Mooseheads a 3-0 lead at 6:31 with his third goal of the season coming unassisted.

Charlottetown got on the board with Cooper’s first goal of the season and as an Islander at 9:42. Alexandre Goulet and Kameron Kielly drew assists.

With the extra attacker on the ice, the Islanders made it a one-goal game with 18 seconds to go with Chlapik’s sixth goal of the season from Spenser Cobbold. The Mooseheads would hold on for the win, despite being outshot 11-9.

Zachary Fucale made 24 saves in the win for Halifax. McDonald made 27 saves in the loss for Charlottetown.

The Islanders are in Saint John on Sunday for a 3 p.m. puck drop.

Islanders Insights
-Islanders kept Danish superstar Nikolaj Ehlers pointless in his season debut since returning from the Winnipeg Jets. He was a minus-one.

-Hits were 18-14 in favour of Halifax.

-Filip Chlapik led the Islanders in shots with five; four of which considered dangerous

-Alexandre Goulet had a plus-two rating.

-Daryl MacCallum played the final 18 seconds making one save.
