Ex-Isles goalie Bibeau assigned to Marlies

Former Charlottetown Islanders goalie Antoine Bibeau was the last goaltender cut from the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp and has been assigned to the team's AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

The news was announced yesterday.

The 20-year-old, Victoriaville, Que., native made appearances in two pre-season games with the Maple Leafs. On Sept. 23, Bibeau made 15 saves in 30:15 played to share a shutout with Jonathan Bernier against the Philadelphia Flyers. The next night, Bibeau played 30:33 against the Ottawa Senators and stopped 18-of-20 shots.

Toronto drafted Bibeau in the sixth round, 172nd overall in 2013.

Bibeau spent two and half seasons in Charlottetown with the P.E.I. Rocket and Charlottetown Islanders. Originally a fifth round pick by the now-defunct Lewiston Manieiacs in 2010, Bibeau would go on to post a 43-40 record, 3.32 goals against average, a 0.901 save percentage and six shutouts with the Rocket/Islanders.

At the Christmas trade period, Bibeau was dealt to the eventual President Cup Champions Val-d'Or Foreurs where he posted a 13-8 record with a 3.03 goals against average, 0.900 save percentage and one shutout. In 24 playoff games, he led the Foreurs with a 2.80 goals against average and a 0.913 save percentage.

After four games and semi-finals elimination to the Edmonton Oil Kings at the MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament in London, Ont., Bibeau was named the tournament's top goalie with a 2.76 goals against average and a 0.932 save percentage. He was the only goalie to have a shutout and it came in the tournament's opener in a 51-save effort against the London Knights.

Islanders painting to rink pink this weekend

The Charlottetown Islanders are preparing for a two-game home stand this weekend with the fight against Breast Cancer taking center stage.

On Friday evening, the Islanders will take on the Val-d'Or Foreurs at 7 p.m. Members from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the CIBC Run for the Cure will be on hand selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a limited edition Pink jersey to be worn by the team on Saturday night in the game against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at 7 p.m.

For the game Saturday night, the Charlottetown Islanders are inviting all breast cancer survivors to the game free of charge and will be acknowledging them in a pregame ceremony.

“We wanted to come up with a way to acknowledge the courage and tenacity of our Island Breast Cancer survivors, above and beyond just raising money," said Islanders President of Hockey Operations Craig Foster. "It makes it a lot more meaningful when you can see those who have fought the battle and won. Of course, we want to also acknowledge the courage of those who lost their fight with this terrible disease with a moment of silence prior to the game."

Mike DiPaolo signs with AHL's Springfield Falcons

Former Charlottetown Islanders defenceman Mike DiPaolo has signed with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

Springfield is the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 20-year-old skated in 51 games with the Islanders last season, recording four assists and 165 penalty minutes.

“I’m pretty excited,” said the Brantford, Ont., native. “I wasn’t really expecting anything to start off the year but I’m glad I had a good camp.”

DiPaolo attended Columbus’ rookie camp and took part in the Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich.

“I want to be up there and be in every game and improve and develop. I just want to play how I play - physical.”

Springfield opens their 2014-2015 season in Syracuse against the Crunch at 7 p.m. EST.

Wildcats down Islanders 5-3

Ivan Barbashev scored a hat-trick to lead the Moncton Wildcats to a 5-3 win over the Charlottetown Islanders Sunday afternoon at Eastlink Centre.

The Islanders drop to 4-2-1-0 on the season as the Wildcats improve to 4-2-0-0 on the season.

Charlottetown trailed 4-0 going into the third period before scoring three of their own to make it interesting.

"We really made a push to comeback but we just came up short at the end," said Islanders rookie Mitchell Balmas.

It stings, said Islanders forward Bradley Kennedy.

"We kind of shot ourselves in the foot in the first period taking all those penalties but it's just the way things go."

Balmas said the team is pushing to play a full 60-minute game.

"We're not right there yet. We just got to keep going, be discipline, battle and do the little things right."

Both Balmas and Kennedy scored goals in the third period for the Islanders.

Moncton opened the scoring at 7:03 of the first period with Ivan Barbashev's first goal of the season and of the game. Christophe Lalonde and Conor Garland drew assists. Shots were 13-6 in favour of Moncton, despite having four power plays.

In the second period, Mathieu Olivier gave Moncton a 2-0 lead at 8:02 with his first goal of the season. Will Smith and Stephen Johnson drew assists. Barbashev added his second goal of the game at 14:48 to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead before Lalonde's third of the season made it 4-0 at 16:50 on the power play. Shot were 16-7 Moncton.

"They buried their opportunities," said Kennedy on the second period. "I think we gave them two odd-man rushes and they capitalized."

The Islanders found the back of the net at the 7:24 mark of the third period with Balmas' second goal of the season. Kennedy drew the lone assist. Kennedy then made it a two-goal game with a power play goal at 13:26 with his second goal of the season. Oliver Cooper and Ryan MacKinnon picked up assists. Just 1:12 later, Julien Avon's first goal of the season made it 4-3 with Samuel Guilbault picking up the lone assist.

The comeback was short lived as Barbashev added his third of the game at 17:26.

Islanders held a 19-7 shot advantage in the third period.

Alex Dubeau made 29 saves in the winning cage for Moncton as Mason McDonald took the loss for Charlottetown making 31 saves.

The Islanders are in Saint John on Wednesday Oct. 1 to battle the Sea Dogs.

“We just got to take the positives out of the game, so we’ll worry about the negatives coming up this week and come back in Saint John…just play a full 60 minutes and work it down low,” said Balmas.

Game time on Wednesday is 7 p.m. AST

Islanders Insights:
-Islanders power play was one-for-two

-Islanders penalty kill was five-for-six

-Oliver Cooper led the team in hits with three

-Islanders outhit the Wildcats 13-12

-Kameron Kielly was 14-for-18 in the face-off circle

-Mitchell Balmas lead the team in shots with six, two of which were considered dangerous

Islanders down Titan for second straight win

Kameron Kielly’s late second period goal proved to be the winner in a 4-3 Charlottetown Islanders win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan Friday night at Eastlink Centre.

“We battled hard but we still have yet to put together 60 minutes,” said the 17-year-old Charlottetown native Kielly. “We played hard and obviously that’s two big points for us again against them and we’re happy with the outcome.”

With the win, the Islanders improve to 4-1-1-0 on the season with nine points.

It’s still too early to be mesmerized by the record, said Kielly.

“Obviously we’ll take the points if we can get them. We’ll keep building on it and hopefully better things can come.”

The Titan losses its fifth straight game and sit last in the Maritimes Division with a 1-5-0-0 record.

Bradley Kennedy and Kielly scored 1:11 apart late in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Kielly also added an assist on the night.

Mark Simpson led the way for the Titan with two goals.

It was just Wednesday when these two teams last met in Bathurst. Kielly said the Islanders had more of a jump tonight.

“We played more of a complete game and we played more minutes than we did Wednesday but we’re still working on putting 60 minutes together.”

Filip Chlapik opened the scoring at the 4:23 mark of the first period with his fifth goal of the young season. Daniel Sprong and Guillaume Rioux-Legault drew assists. Shots were 12-9 in favour of Bathurst.

In the second period, Simpson tied the game for Bathurst at the 2:01 mark with Egor Popov drawing the assist. Alexandre Goulet regained the lead for Charlottetown with his second goal of the season at 6:30 with Kielly drawing the lone assist. The Titan tied the game 2-2 with Simpson’s second goal of the game and sixth of the season at 12:09.

The Islanders pulled ahead 3-2 with a power play goal from Bradley Kennedy at 16:14. Ryan MacKinnon and Spenser Cobbold drew assists. Moments later, Kielly’s fifth goal of the season made it a 4-2 Islanders game at 17:25. Goulet and Oliver Cooper drew assists.

Kennedy’s power play goal was huge, said Kielly.

“That was big for us to cash in on that, grab a little momentum and I was just looking to follow that up with a good shift and was fortunate enough to get a bounce.”

Shots in the second period were 13-8 in Bathurst’s favour.

The Titan had the lone goal of the third period coming on the power play, with the net empty, off the stick of Juraj Mily at 18:34.

Mason McDonald picked up his second win making 30 saves for the Islanders. Rookie Alexandre Lagace took the loss for the Titan making 20 saves.

The Islanders will host the Moncton Wildcats Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. AST.

“Not hard to get up for that one,” said Kielly. “Obviously a pretty good rivalry as everyone knows. We have to be up and ready for it and play a complete game.”

Islanders Insights
-Islanders were one-for-five on the power play

-Islanders killed off two-of-three penalties

-Defenceman Dexter Weber led the game with four hits.

-Ryan MacKinnon led the Islanders in shots on goal with four.

-Filip Chlapik was 11-for-15 in the face-off circle.
