The Saint John Sea Dogs erased a 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals in the second period for a 4-3 win over the Charlottetown Islanders Friday night in pre-season action at Harbour Station.
Charlottetown falls to 2-3-0-0 in pre-season action as the Sea Dogs pick up a 3-1-0-1 pre-season record.
Spencer Smallman led the way for Saint John with two goals. Julien Tessier and Daniel Del Paggio also scored for the Sea Dogs. Scoring for Charlottetown were Daniel Sprong, Kameron Kielly and Julien Avon.
The Islanders opened the scoring with two goals 27 seconds apart. First, Sprong’s third goal of the pre-season made it 1-0 at 6:29 with Filip Chlapik and former Sea Dog Oliver Cooper picking up assists. Kielly made it 2-0 at 6:56 with his fourth of the pre-season from Alexandre Goulet and David Henley. Sea Dogs held a 14-12 shot advantage.
In the second period, Smallman cut the Islanders lead in half with his first of the pre-season at 4:56 on the power play. First overall pick, Luke Green, drew the lone assist. Saint John tied things up at the 15:10 mark with Del Paggio’s first of the pre-season from Mitchell Dempsey and Nathan Noel. The Sea Dogs took their first lead of the game at 18:50 with Tessier scoring his second goal of the pre-season. Samuel Dove-McFalls and Mathieu Joseph drew assists. Saint John outshot the Islanders 24-4 in the second period.
The Sea Dogs took a two-goal lead of their own just 1:47 into the final frame with Smallman scoring his second of the night. Noel and Juraj Siska drew assists. Charlottetown came within a goal with a short-handed marker from Avon at 14:47. Goulet and Luc Deschenes drew assists.
Sebastien Auger picked up the win for Saint John making 24 saves. Daryl MacCallum took the loss stopping 50-of-54 shots.
Both teams will go head-to-head tomorrow night at the Eastlink Centre in the final pre-season game for both teams. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
