Islanders lose heartbreaker to Mooseheads
A no-call for goaltender inference led to a Halifax Mooseheads overtime goal in a 6-5 win over the Charlottetown Islanders Saturday night at Eastlink Centre.
Maxime Fortier scored a questionable goal that gives the Mooseheads their first win of the season and a 1-1-0-0 record on the season.
“We weren’t leaving until it was fully decided,” said Islanders forward Nathan Yetman. “It was a tough play and a tough call but that’s how it goes some nights.”
Islanders pick up a point in the loss and now sport a 1-0-0-1 record on the season.
The Islanders trailed 5-3 with less than five minutes to go before Halifax's Kelly Bent received a match penalty for checking from behind. Mitchell Balmas and Kameron Kielly scored 27 seconds apart on the power play to send the game into overtime.
It was a tough loss, said Yetman.
“You have to look at the fact that we battled back and scored two late ones and got one point out of it. Yeah it sucks to lose, but as a team we battled hard.”
Filip Chlapik led the way for the Islanders with a goal and two assists. Timo Meier (1-2), Ryan Falkenham (2-1), Morgan Nauss (1-2) and Cavan Fitzgerald (1-2) all had three-point games for the Mooseheads.
The Mooseheads opened the scoring with a power play marker from Nauss at 4:18 with Vincent Watt and Andrew Shewfelt drawing assists. The Islanders tied it 1-1 with Chlapik finding the net at 14:57. Samuel Guilbault and Daniel Sprong drew assists.
Chlapik’s goal was his first in the QMJHL.
“I’m very happy,” said the Czech Republic native. “It’s amazing because I’m from the Czech and I’m happy I scored the goal.”
On another power play, the Mooseheads took a 2-1 lead at 16:30 with Fitzgerald’s first of the season. The Islanders tied it up again with Yetman’s first of the season at 18:01 from Daniel Sprong and rookie Keith Getson.
“I almost got a broken rib off Sprong’s shot but it felt real good. It just feels amazing to score goals,” said Yetman, who was called up this weekend to fill in for missing bodies.
Yetman said he’s looking to prove himself back onto the team after being released from training camp back in August.
“You get that little bit of hungriness in your game…you want to give that extra little bit of drive, especially after being cut. I’m here to do my role. I’m here for one reason and that’s put on the jersey and play my hardest.”
Halifax’s Meier had the lone goal in the second period at the 1:45 mark to give the Mooseheads a 3-2 lead.
In the third period, Will Thompson’s point shot found the back of the net to tie the game 3-3 on the power play at 1:16. Luc Deschenes and Balmas drew assists. Halfiax regained the lead with Ryan Falkenham’s second goal of the season at 6:45 on the power play. Falkenham added another power play goal at 11:51 to give the Mooseheads a 5-3 lead.
Balmas scored his first goal in the QMJHL at 18:12 from Dexter Weber and Chlapik before Kielly tied the game at 18:39 from Chlapik and Spenser Cobbold. Both goals came during the five-minute power play.
Fortier’s overtime goal came at the 3:35 mark. Meier and Nauss drew assists.
Kevin Resop picked up the win for Halifax making 17 saves. Daryl MacCallum suffered the loss for Charlottetown making 37 saves.
The Charlottetown Islanders are back in action on Friday Sept. 19 when they travel to Cape Breton to battle the Screaming Eagles at 7 p.m.
