Alexandre Goulet’s late third period goal stopped a potential Screaming Eagles comeback as the Charlottetown Islanders picked up a 5-4 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Friday night at Centre 200.
Kameron Kielly scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Islanders, who improved their record to 2-0-1-0 on the season. Kyle Farrell had a goal and two assists for Cape Breton, who falls to 2-1-0-0 on the season.
The Islanders opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the first period with Daniel Sprong burying his second goal of the season, thanks to a great setup from Filip Chlapik. Spenser Cobbold also picked up an assist.
Not long after, the Eagles tied the game with Maxim Lazarez’s third of the season at 12:04. Farrell and Evgeny Svechnikov drew assists. Shots after the first period were 8-6 in favour of Cape Breton.
In the second period, Kielly gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead at 3:27 with his third goal of the season. Dexter Weber drew the lone assist. The Islanders took a 3-1 lead with Chlapik putting home a power play goal at 18:28 for his second goal of the season. Kielly and Sprong drew assists. Islanders had a 13-9 edge in shots.
In the third period, the Islanders took a three-goal lead with Kielly’s second goal of the game just 3:09 into the frame. Luc Deschenes and Mitchell Balmas drew assists.
Cape Breton cut the lead in half with Farrell scoring his league leading sixth goal of the season at 5:07 on the power play. Jason Bell drew the lone assist. Just 59 seconds later, Julien Pelletier brought the Eagles to within a goal with his first of the season. Farrell was credited with the lone assist.
The Screaming Eagles tied it up with a goal from Bell at 13:04 from Pelletier and Bradley Lalonde.
Goulet, playing in his first game back, gave the Islanders the 5-4 lead at 16:02 with his first goal of the season. Guillaume Rioux-Legault drew the lone assist. Shots were 17-5 in favour of Cape Breton.
Daryl MacCallum picked up the win for Charlottetown making 30 saves in his third straight start. Miguel Sullivan took the loss for the hometown Eagles making 19 saves.
The teams rematch tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
Islanders Insights
