Cobbold plays OT hero as Islanders keep streak alive with win over Sea Dogs


Spenser Cobbold scored at 3:08 of overtime to lift the Charlottetown Islanders to a 3-2 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs Saturday night at Harbour Station.

The Islanders are on a roll with their fourth-straight win and improve to 13-11-1-1 on the season. The Sea Dogs fall to 15-5-1-3 on the season.

The last time the Islanders won four games in a row was back at the beginning of last season when the Islanders started 5-0-0-0.


Charlottetown opened the scoring at the 12:29 mark of the first period with an unassisted goal from Luc Deschenes. The goal was his third of the season, and second in Saint John.

Shots were 12-11 in favour of Charlottetown.

In the second period, the Islanders took a 2-0 lead with Oliver Cooper's fourth of the year on the power play at 2:49. Kameron Kielly and Bradley Kennedy drew assists.

The Sea Dogs cut the lead in half just 27 seconds later with Thomas Chabot's fifth goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.

Just 57 seconds after that, Matthew Highmore buried his fourth of the season to tie the game 2-2. Daniel Del Paggio and Bailey Webster drew assists.

Shots were 13-9 Saint John.

The third period was scoreless with Saint John taking an 8-4 advantage in shots.

Cobbold's overtime goal was his third goal of the season. Guillaume Rioux-Legault and Ryan MacKinnon drew assists.

Mason McDonald made 31 saves in the win for Charlottetown. Sea Dogs goaltender Sebastien Auger took the loss making 24 saves.

The Islanders return home tomorrow afternoon to host the Rimouski Oceanic at 3 p.m.

Islanders Insights:
-Luc Deschenes led the Islanders in shots with four.

-Islanders were 1-for-3 on the power play, while going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

-Ross Johnston led the game in hits with four. Islanders finished the hits with 23 versus Saint John’s 21.

-Filip Rydstrom went 11-for-17 in the face-off dot.
