Islanders down Tigres 2-1 in Johnston’s debut

Daniel Sprong scored both goals as the Charlottetown Islanders downed the visiting Victoriaville Tigres Saturday night at Eastlink Centre.

The Islanders win their second straight and improve to 11-11-1-1 on the season. Victoriaville losses their second straight game and fall to 12-8-0-3.

It feels good to be a winning streak, said Sprong.

“We have to continue getting the wins, keeping playing our game and playing a full 60 minutes and the wins will come.”

Ross Johnston, who made his Islanders debut said the team is starting to come together.

“They boys have been happy, but with that being said, we can’t be satisfied with where we are at now. We have to keep it going tomorrow against Drummondville.”

Sprong said it was a good win and was good to have Johnston back.

“I think he brought a lot of momentum and we were happy with out game but we have to bounce back again tomorrow.”

Johnston said it felt good to finally step on the ice in an Islanders jersey.

“Obviously a little rusty in some aspects but it was good to be back out there and more importantly to get the win.”

The Islanders and Tigres ended the first period scoreless with the Islanders taking a 21-8 advantage in shots.

Sprong opened the scoring at the 10:09 mark of the first period with his 11th goal of the season. Kameron Kielly and Spenser Cobbold drew assists on the tic-tac-toe play. Shots were 11-10 in favour of Victoriaville.

In the third period, Sprong added his second of the game and 12th of the season just 40 seconds into the frame. Ryan MacKinnon and Kielly drew assists.

The shutout bid for Mason McDonald lasted 59:55 when Nikita Li scored with five seconds to go with the extra attacker on the ice to make it 2-1. The goal was Li’s third of the season with Jordan Ty Fournier and Filip Pyrochta drawing assists.

McDonald made 28 saves in the win for Charlottetown. Chase Marchand made 40 saves in the loss for Victoriaville.

The Islanders host the Drummondville Voltigeurs Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Islanders recently beat the Voltigeurs 8-3 in Drummondville last Sunday.

Johnston said the Islanders have to come out and play hard.

“Regardless of the skill set, they are very skilled upfront. We just have to come out and play our game.”
