Ex-Rocket Nestrasil claimed off waivers by Carolina

Former P.E.I. Rocket forward Andrej Nestrasil was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes today.

The 23-year-old was placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings yesterday. In 13 games, Nestrasil picked up two assists and a minus-three rating.

In a team press release, Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis said Nestrasil's size will contribute to the team's current group of forwards.

"He has improved in each of his pro seasons and took a big step last year with Grand Rapids."

Nestrasil spent one full season with the Rocket in 2010-2011 scoring 19 goals and 70 points in 58 games. Prior to joining the Rocket, the native of the Czech Republic was the Victoriaville Tigres' eighth overall pick in the 2008 CHL Import Draft. He played two seasons in Victoriaville from 2008-2010 collecting 38 goals and 108 points in 116 games.

Detroit drafted Nestrasil in the third round, 75th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Nestrasil has spent time in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins and the East Coast Hockey League with the Teledo Walleye before cracking Detroit's opening night lineup this season. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 9.
