Islanders blowout Voltigeurs to wrap up road trip
Alexandre Goulet scored a goal and picked up three assists to lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a dominating 8-3 win over the Drummondville Voltigeurs Sunday evening.
The Islanders finish its three-in-three Quebec road trip with four out of a possible six points and come back home with a 10-11-1-1 record on the season. The Voltigeurs fall to 9-9-0-2 on the season.
Kameron Kielly, Daniel Sprong and Filip Chlapik all had a goal and an assist the Islanders as Filip Rydstrom (2-1) and Spenser Cobbold (1-2) had three-point nights. Rydstrom and Cobbold also had fights to pick up Gordie Howe hat-tricks.
It is the first time since Jan. 4, 2004, the Islanders franchise scored eight goals in one game while in on the road in the province of Quebec.
Islanders opened the scoring just 3:56 into the contest with Chlapik’s 10th goal of the season. Goulet and Bradley Kennedy drew assists. The Voltigeurs tied it 1-1 at 13:41 with Matthew Boucher’s second goal of the season. Shots were 7-6 in favour of Drummondville.
In the second period, Islanders captain Ryan MacKinnon gave Charlottetown a 2-1 lead at 3:19. Goulet and Chlapik drew assists. Cobbold increased the lead at 6:17 with his second goal of the season with Kielly and Luc Deschenes drawing assists. Rydstrom scored short-handed at 8:02 for his second goal of the season with Keith Getson drawing the lone assist.
The Voltigeurs made it a 4-2 game at 12:54 with Joey Ratelle’s 14th goal of the season before Alex Barre-Boulet’s third of the season made it a one-goal game at 16:29.
Shots were 14-13 in favour of Drummondville.
In the third period, Goulet gave the Islanders a 5-3 lead with his ninth goal of the season and third point of the night at 5:02. Deschenes drew the lone assist. Sprong added to the lead at 12:36 with his 10th goal of the season with Cobbold picking up the only assist.
Kielly added a power play goal at 14:10 to give the Islanders a commanding 7-3 lead with Rydstrom and Goulet drawing assists.
Rydstrom capped off the scoring with his third of the season at 15:42 for an 8-3 Islanders lead. Sprong and Cobbold drew assists.
Shots were 18-11 Charlottetown.
Daryl MacCallum picked up the win for Charlottetown making 29 saves. Louis-Philip Guindon allowed four goals on 17 shots and was given the loss for Drummondville. Joe Fleschler made 16 saves on 20 shots in relief.
The Islanders return home Friday Nov. 15 to host the Victoriaville Tigres at 7 p.m.
Islanders Insights:
-Daniel Sprong led the Islanders in shots with eight.
-Islanders were a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, while scoring one goal on three power play opportunities.
-Kameron Kielly and Filip Rydstrom were excellent on the face-offs. Kielly was 12-for-18, while Rydstrom went 15-for-21.
-David Henley had three hits in the game to lead the Islanders in that category.
-On Jan. 4, 2004, the P.E.I. Rocket beat the Quebec Remparts, in Quebec City, 8-2.
