Second period costs Islanders in Wildtown

The Moncton Wildcats scored five goals in the second period, erasing a 2-1 deficit, to beat the Charlottetown Islanders 7-4 Friday night at Moncton Coliseum.

Charlottetown took an early 2-0 lead before the Wildcats made it 2-1 with 1.1 left in the first period. It was all Moncton after that.

"We just thought the game was over," said rookie Chris Chaddock on the second period. "We were up and stopped moving our feet and stopped playing our game."

Daniel Sprong, who scored two goals on the night, said the team took the first period for granted.

"We didn't play a full 60. I think we played a 20-minute game and it's not good enough against a team like them."

Chaddock said Moncton's late first period goal lost the Islanders’ momentum.

"We really had to stick with it and we weren't able to do that."

Chaddock opened the scoring with his second goal in just two games since being signed on Monday, at the 5:49 mark of the first period. Filip Chlapik and Keith Getson drew assists. The Islanders took a 2-0 lead with Sprong's eighth of the season on the power play at 8:43. Oliver Cooper and Ryan MacKinnon drew assists.

Alexandre Jacob put Moncton on the board with 1.1 seconds left in the first period. Shots were 12-5 in favour of Charlottetown.

In the second period, the Wildcats were quick to tie the game as Conor Garland scored his fifth of the season at 2:02. Moments later, Moncton's Will Smith scored short-handed at 5:25. The goal would spoil the night for starter Mason McDonald after three goals on eight shots.

Sprong tied the game at three with his second of the game at 7:43. Chlapik and Getson drew assists.

Smith regained the Wildcats lead at 11:28 with his second of the game before Garland's second of the game made it 5-3 at 15:23.

Ivan Barbashev made it 6-3 Wildcats with his 12th of the season at 19:42. Shots were 14-11 Islanders.

Moncton added to their lead just 33 seconds into the final frame with Zachary Malatesta's third goal of the season, coming on the power play.

The Islanders capped off the scoring with Filip Rydstrom's first QMJHL goal at 16:27. Luc Deschenes and Will Thompson drew assists.

Alex Dubeau made 30 saves in the win for Moncton. Daryl MacCallum made 14 saves on 18 shots in relief of McDonald.

Islanders are back at it Sunday afternoon for a tilt against the Halifax Mooseheads at 4 p.m.
